We eat fruits on a daily basis but do we know about their nutritional benefits? There are two fruits; the Pineapple and the Pomegranate, both have sufficient nutritional benefits. So, those of you who have never eaten them, here’s an opportunity to give them a try. The other good thing about these fruits, is that they are grown right here in Trinidad & Tobago.
The Pineapple is one of the more popular fruits. It is produced from a tropical, perennial plant, which grows up to approximately 3-4 feet. The fruit is considered oval to cylindrical in shape and has a rough outer skin. It is sweet and juicy on the inside, with a colour ranging from creamy white to yellow. They are available at any Supermarket or Vegetable Mart in Trinidad.
It’s interesting to note that fresh Pineapple is low in calories. The juicy flesh contains no saturated fats or cholesterol, and is also a rich source of soluble and insoluble dietary fibre. Studies have shown that regular consumption of pineapple fights against arthritis and indigestion. You can enjoy fresh Pineapple by preparing it yourself.
Here are the items you will need and a few simple steps to peel the Pineapple:
- A Pineapple
- Cutting Board
- Sharp Knife
1. Wash the Pineapple.
2. Place the fruit on a cutting board and using the sharp knife, cut off the top and bottom.
3. Place the base side down and carefully cut off the skin. Carve out any remaining "eyes" with the tip of the knife.
4. Once the skin is removed, slice or cut the fruit into desirable chunks. Go ahead and consume.
You may also choose to use a pineapple "corer". This will help make the job easier however, sometimes using corers result in wastage of quite a bit of fruit since they often cannot be adjusted for different-sized fruits.
Pomegranates are believed to have been enjoyed for thousands of years. They have been found in Egyptian tombs, eaten by Babylonian soldiers prior to battle and incorporated into Persian wedding ceremonies, to symbolize a joyous future.
Research has shown that the Pomegranate is one fruit which can add valuable nutrition, including antioxidants, with one pomegranate providing approximately 40 percent of the daily requirement of the antioxidant vitamin C. Antioxidants balance cholesterol and blood sugar to protect the heart, as well as assist in lowering chronic inflammation in our body.
If you've never eaten a pomegranate before, you may be wondering what part is actually edible. Well the aril (tiny sacks which covers the seeds) is the edible part, and it contains added fibre. Inside each aril is a crunchy fibre-rich seed and although some people may spit them out, you can in fact eat them. You can also use the arils to sprinkle over salads or cooked dishes.
Are you ready to try a Pomegranate? Come on, you can DIY (Do it yourself) with just a few items and some simple steps.
- Large bowl
- Cold Water
- Sharp knife
1. Fill the large bowl, two inches from the top with cold water.
2. Cut off the top of the fruit with the sharp knife.
3. Lightly slice the pomegranate into quarters, from top to bottom but be careful not to pierce the arils.
4. Immerse the fruit in the water and soak for 5 minutes.
5. Holding the fruit under water, break sections apart with your fingers. While separating the arils from the membrane they will sink to the bottom of the bowlwhile the other parts will float to the top.
6. Remove and discard all skin and membranes that are floating at the top.
8. Strain the water and place the arils onto a sheet of paper towel to absorb the excess water.
9. The arils are now ready to be eaten.
